PENGERTIAN DOMAIN

Domain adalah sebuah string pengenal yang digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi sebuah server seperti web server atau mail server pada sebuah jaringan komputer ataupun internet agar mudah untuk diakses oleh user. Dengan menggunakan domain anda tidak perlu lagi untuk mengingat alamat IP dari server yang akan anda tuju, sebab semuanya telah diatur oleh Domain Name Server (DNS) sehingga domain yang anda tulis akan terhubung lansung dengan alamat IP server.

Singkatnya domain digunakan untuk berkomunikasi antara manusia dengan komputer, dan alamat IP digunakan untuk berkomunikasi antar komputer. Pada hirarki Domain Name System (DNS), domain terbagi menjadi beberapa tingkatan yaitu: Top level domain, Second level domain dan yang lebih rendah, masing-masing tingkatan tersebut memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda-beda. Top Level Domain (TLD) sering juga disebut sebagai ekstensi domain, merupakan bagian yang paling akhir dari nama domain yang dapat anda temukan setelah tanda titik. Contohnya ialah .com, .org, .net, .gov, .mil.

Top Level Domain juga dibagi menjadi beberapa kategori, salah satu kategorinya ialah Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), yaitu sebuah domain dengan panjang dua karakter yang digunakan pada setiap negara dengan masing-masing kode yang berbeda berdasarkan standar ISO yang telah ditetapkan. Contoh dari ccTLD adalah Indonesia dengan domain “.id”, Singapura “.sg”, Malaysia “.my”, Jepang “.jp” dan masih banyak lagi.

Skema Cara Kerja Domain

Pada hirarki selanjutnya dari domain name system terdapat second level domain, yaitu bagian dari domain yang memiliki posisi disebelah kiri tanda titik atau top level domain. Contoh misalnya website nesabamedia.com, dimana “nesabamedia” merupakan second level domain dan “.com” adalah top level domainnya.

Pada second level domain juga terdapat kode negara atau yang disebut country code second level domain (ccSLD) yang merupakan bagian dari ccTLD. Bagian dari ccSLD dari suatu domain terletak diantara SLD dan ccTLD. Contohnya pada domain indonesia.go.id, “.go” merupakan ccSLD yang terletak diantara SLD (indonesia) dan ccTLD (.id).

Seluruh penggunaan nama domain tersebut diatur oleh lembaga internasional bernama Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), dan untuk penggunaan domain dengan kode negara diatur oleh negaranya sendiri, contoh misalnya indonesia untuk domain .id diatur oleh Pengelola Nama Domain Internet Indonesia (PANDI).

Pada suatu website, domain memiliki peran yang sangat penting, tidak hanya sekedar agar user dapat dengan mudah mengakses halaman web anda tanpa harus menuliskan alamat IP server, namun lebih dari itu, sebab nama domain itu sendiri nantinya akan menjadi identitas atau brand dari website yang anda miliki.

Domain yang unik dan mudah diingat merupakan salah satu faktor agar website anda dapat dengan mudah ditemukan oleh target pembaca anda selain dengan memanfaatkan SEO.

2. Domain .net

Domain .net juga merupakan generic top level domain pada Domain Name System. Nama .net diambil dari kata network, yang awalnya ditujukan untuk organisasi yang bergelut dalam teknologi jaringan seperti penyedia layanan internet dan perusahaan infrastruktur lainnya.

Namun kemudian batasan tersebut tidak dipatuhi sehingga penggunaan domain .net menjadi terbuka untuk tujuan umum dan menjadi alternatif lain sebagai pengganti domain .com. Contohnya telkom.net, flagpedia.net, asp.net dan masih banyak lagi.

3. Domain .org

Domain .org juga merupakan generic top level domain pada Domain Name System. Nama .org diambil dari kata organization, yang awalnya ditujukan untuk organisasi yang bersifat non-profit.

Namun kemudian batasan tersebut tidak diberlakukan dan telah dihapus, sehingga domain ini dapat digunakan secara umum, biasanya digunakan oleh sekolah, poyek yang bersifat opensource, komunitas dan juga dapat digunakan untuk hal yang berprofit.
